OMS is Now Azure Monitor: Get Smarter About Managing Your Infrastructure

You may be familiar with Microsoft Operations Management Suite (OMS) — a management system that works to simplify your IT processes. Troubleshooting, change tracking, and updates are just a few common IT tasks that OMS could handle. OMS components brought together backup services, site recovery, log analytics, and automation and are available for hybrid, multi-cloud, and on-premises environments.

Microsoft deprecated OMS as of January 2019, moving all functionality into the Azure portal. Learn more about why OMS and the new Azure Monitor are useful for your IT workflow and what has changed with the migration to Azure.

Why Use OMS? 

OMS delivered insight into performance analytics and enabled automation features based on metrics and user rules, making automated provisioning, backups, and alerts a relatively simple matter.

OMS also allowed you to create unique dashboards fueled by user-created queries for your workspaces. Application deployment and orchestrated updates are automated, so you don’t have to spend time on those repetitive tasks. Backup/recovery solutions and automated security monitoring keep your environment protected at all times.

OMS benefited any IT organization with fast deployment and easy setup, cloud-scale abilities, automatic updates, an intuitive interface, and a wide-scope. OMS was designed to be a unified, central-point of management for hybrid-cloud, multi-cloud, and on-premises IT infrastructure.

Azure portal integrates the OMS portal

As of January 15th, 2019 Microsoft migrated all OMS functionality into Azure Monitor. On March 30th, 2019 OMS will be retired completely.

Because more and more enterprise workloads are managed within and alongside Azure resources, the automation and logistics features of OMS were integrated into Microsoft’s cloud offering. This way users have a single dashboard to manage their entire infrastructure. OMS components are now entirely hosted by Azure, bringing together backup, site recovery, log analytics, and automation.

By combining the OMS and Azure portals, monitoring and managing your infrastructure and workflows can be seamless and efficient. Most OMS features will not need to be manually integrated and will continue to work regularly despite the move to Azure portal.

What’s Changing?

Creating Workspaces

Workspaces can only be created using Azure portal, and no new workspaces can be created in OMS. In order to create your Log Analytics workspace, you must have an Azure subscription along with Microsoft SCOM and SCCM. Within your Azure portal, you will need to create a new Log Analytics workspaces.

Cross-Workspace Queries

OMS’s feature, Application Insights Connector, allows you to view Application Insights data within the Log Analytics workspace. Azure portal includes cross-workspace queries, allowing you to query across your Log Analytics workspaces, as opposed to being limited to a singular workspace. This feature is only available in the Azure portal and has the abilities of the Application Insights Connector. That being said, the Application Insights Connector is being fully replaced with cross-workspace queries and will be permanently removed in June 2019.

New Alert Management System

Alerts have been integrated into the Azure portal. Any OMS alerts can still be accessed, but they can only be managed within Azure. In order to fully integrate into the Azure portal, Microsoft suggests that you use the Azure Monitor’s alerting interface. This way all of your alerts can be managed in one place, allowing you to view multiple alerts and filter and group your alerts accordingly.

Traffic Analytics

Traffic analytics is a new way to gain insights into user traffic across your cloud networks. This cloud-based solution provides visibility to traffic across networks, identifies threats by monitoring security, and works to improve application performance. Traffic Analytics is ultimately replacing the Network Security Group (NSG) solution, however existing NSG solutions will continue to function. NSG has been removed from the marketplace, and the features of NSG have been fully adopted into Traffic Analytics.

Additional Changes

In order to migrate your OMS portal to Azure portal, permissions will need to be updated to the Azure portal. All existing deployments will need to be updated in your Azure portal and can be easily scheduled within your portal. Existing OMS deployments should be deleted; however, they will continue to function in OMS. No new deployments can be created in OMS, and OMS is not available for any new customers.

By migrating OMS portal into Azure portal, all of the benefits of Azure portal remain in place while being enhanced with the features of OMS. There are now new, simpler ways to solve and prevent infrastructure problems, and maintaining control of your environments will be easily accessible through Azure portal.
